He started his career in Italtel as R&D engineer, moving  after some years to commercial area. In 1985 he was appointed Deputy General Manager in charge of all the commercial activities of the company. In 1988 promoted General Manager of Italtel.
As CEO of Italtel Giovanni Barbieri realized the huge project of turnaround of the company, outsourcing the production activities, increasing investments in R&D, marketing and innovation. The result of this project was the reduction of Italtel’s workforce of about 5000 employees and the positioning of Italtel as a world leader in multimedia switches for IP networks.
On request by Italtel’s shareholder (Telecom Italia), Barbieri developed a project of shares revision that let Italtel become an independent company with this actual shareholders’ structure: Private Equity (CDR 51%; Advent and Brera 9%); Telecom Italia (20%); Cisco (20%). Before this operation Italtel’s value was around 1 billion Euros.Barbieri was appointed from the new shareholder CEO of Italtel and member of the board.
In 2004 he left Italtel and founded Nepente Team, a company with the mission to invest (its own and from investors) in projects based on innovative business models. Nepente Team acts also as a consultant in strategic projects.
In 2008 Barbieri entered in the new advisory board of ITALTEL .

In the first period of is professional life he covered key roles in Manufacturing, Purchasing , R&D and Personnel in companies dealing with Hi Tech mechanical parts for  control  equipment  tools machines . He founded Storel ( actually   Distar), a Company  that  operates  in distribution of  electronic components, and Selcom specialized in Electronic Manufactoring . Actually he is still  Member of Board of Director of Selcom Elettronica Spa.
In 2001-2003 he was  a member of  Board of Director (Vice President) in  Associazione degli Industriali in Bologna,  Electronic and Electrical Engineering.
In 2004-2006 he was in charge as President in Associazione degli Industriali in Bologna , Electronic and Electrical Engineering Area.
